The DriveThru Surfcamp is about 150 kilometres from Colombo International Airport. They offer a shuttle service, or you can hire a private tuk-tuk or driver at the airport. We spent a night in Colombo and then took public transport to the south. The train ride was quite an adventure, as Sri Lankan trains are different from those in Europe. However, the transfer was smooth and safe.

The Drive-Thru Surfcamp in Sri Lanka is absolutely wonderful. It is located on a beautiful property with various accommodation options, from quad rooms to single rooms, bungalows, and small apartments with balconies. The camp has a lovely pool, a relaxation area, and a separate space for yoga. It feels like living in the jungle, surrounded by palm trees and the sounds of nature, but still very safe and secure.

The food at the camp is outstanding, of high restaurant quality. Every meal was delicious. Sri Lankan food is very spicy, so it might take a day or two to get used to it, but once you do, it’s phenomenal.

The camp offers surf lessons for all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced surfers. After a short interview, you are placed in a group that matches your skill level, so you surf with others at your level. All equipment is available at the camp, but you can also bring your own boards and store them there. The surf lessons are well-structured. Surfing in Sri Lanka is easier than in Europe because the tide difference is minimal, making wave prediction simpler.

Besides surfing, the camp offers many activities to explore the country and its culture. You can visit temples, get a massage, or explore national parks, with help from the camp.

However, the water quality at some surf spots can be poor, and some guests, including myself, got ear infections despite using earplugs. This is mostly because the ears are often wet for too long due to the high humidity and frequent surfing, making it easier for bacteria to grow. Experience has shown that the problem is not always the local water quality but often that people come from a dry climate (like European winter) with ears cleaned by cotton swabs (thus without wax/natural protection), allowing bacteria to thrive quickly. But warm water generally increases the risk of infections.

Overall, the Drive-Thru Surfcamp in Sri Lanka offers a fantastic experience for surfers of all levels, in a beautiful and tranquil environment with excellent facilities and amazing food. Highly recommended!
